Masada

Continuing down the road from our stop at the 'beach', we arrive at Masada. This was a Jewish settlement contructed over 2000 years ago on top of this plateau you see here. When the Romans came upon this settlement, there was no easy way for them to get to the top, since it's surrounded by cliffs on all sides. Well, over time, the Romans built a hill of sand using Jewish slaves. This 'hill' is probably about 1000 feet high, sloping down the back side of the plateau into the mountains. This is how the Romans eventually took over the settlement. What remains is the base of many walls of the buildings that were contructed on the top of Masada.

Here is the 'hill' the Romans built.

This is a synagogue. It wasn't originally, but later during the civilization of the people living here, they converted it.
